A beautiful, glowing complexion isn't just a dream; it's attainable with the right habits and a well-balanced skincare routine. As a dermatology PA, I'm here to share five essential habits that can dramatically improve your skin's health and unlock that radiant glow from within.
1. Cleanse with care
Choose the right cleanser based on your skin type and make cleansing a non-negotiable part of your daily routine. Remove makeup and dirt to prevent clogged pores and dullness, but avoid over-cleansing as it can strip the skin of its natural oils. If you are wearing makeup daily or sunscreen (yes that should be everyone), then a good double cleansing in the evening is warranted.
My current favorite double cleanser combo is an oil based cleanser such as CeraVe Makeup Removing Balm followed by a gentle foaming cleanser like EltaMD Foaming Facial Cleanser. Alternatively a gentle micellar water like Bioderma can be a great option if you are not a fan of oils or balms.
2. Exfoliate—but not too much!
Exfoliating is essential for removing dead skin cells, dirt and environmental buildup to reveal fresh, smooth, glowing skin. Stick to gentle exfoliators that don't cause micro-tears, and avoid overdoing it—once or twice a week is generally enough. I recommend chemical exfoliation over mechanical exfoliation. This means using exfoliants with glycolic, lactic or salicylic acid, also known as alpha-hydroxy acids and beta-hydroxy acids. I am not a fan of using cleansers with the rough beads or scrubs in it, as this is too harsh for your skin and can ultimately damage your skin.
My go to chemical exfoliant time and time again is, REN Clean Skincare Glycolic Lactic Radiance Renewal Mask for it’s gentle yet effective exfoliation.
3. Hydrate your way to health
Proper hydration is crucial for plump, glowing skin. Contrary to popular belief, moisturizing is even more important when you have skin conditions like acne to help repair your skin barrier. Drink plenty of water, and ensure you're using a moisturizer that suits your skin type. Don't forget to apply it daily, even if you have oily skin, as dehydrated skin can still produce excess oil.
Needing an ultra rich moisturizer for super dry skin or winter months? Then check out Sente Dermal Repair formulated with heparin sulfate analogs that also aid in reducing redness and decrease inflammation, perfect for those with rosacea or sensitive skin individuals.
Already oily and acne prone, looking for a light moisturizer? I’d start with La Roche-Posay Matte Face Moisturizer or EltaMD AM Therapy.
4. Say "yes" to sunscreen EVERY SINGLE DAY
Protecting your skin from harmful UV rays is a must, rain or shine, beach day or work day. Use broad-spectrum sunscreens with an SPF of at least 30. Make sunscreen an indispensable part of your daily skincare routine to prevent premature aging and skin damage. The best sunscreen is the one that you are going to use so find one you like and stick to it!

5. Nourish from within
You are what you eat, and your diet has a huge impact on your skin. Incorporate skin-friendly foods rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals to strengthen your skin and promote radiance. Avoid ultra processed foods and those with a high glycemic index. A balanced diet will not only help your skin but also improve your overall well-being.
It’s not too late to get your best, healthiest, most glowing skin yet- go get it :)!
